The Creation-Science Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/DNA.jpg\"><\/a>I recently read two books on Bible and science issues.\u00a0 One was the summary of RATE research by Dr. Don DeYoung, <em>Thousands&#8230;Not Billions<\/em>,\u00a0which spoke in favor of detailed scientific support for a young age for the earth (with which I agree).\u00a0 I was refreshed by the honest spirit I found.\u00a0 At points where the evidence supported a young earth but also left further challenges in different directions, DeYoung did not duck the question and admitted the need for further research by young earth scientists.\u00a0 He also couched his statements in terms of absolutes when he thought things were clear but in probabilistic terminology when\u00a0young earth\u00a0conclusions could be held but the evidence did not rule out other interpretations automatically.<\/p>\n<p>The other book I just finished is Francis Collins&#8217; book <em>The Language of Love<\/em>.\u00a0 Collins is the somewhat famous head of the government genome project.\u00a0 He is also one of the founders of BioLogos, an organization dedicated to propagating the\u00a0position of theistic evolution.\u00a0 It seemed for the most part to be a book recycling the old argument that similarity implies common ancestry biologically speaking.\u00a0 It just adds the detailed information of the human and animal DNA to the argument.<\/p>\n<p>One of the interesting comments I found by Collins was the following:\u00a0 &#8220;While many scientists ascribe to TE [theistic evolution], they are in general reluctant to speak out for fear of negative reaction from their scientific peers, or perhaps for fear of criticism from the theological community&#8221; (p. 202).\u00a0 While I can accept this concern to some degree, I find the concern to be somewhat puny next to the same concern for young earth creationists who are scientists or even those old earth creationists who don&#8217;t believe in evolution.\u00a0 I have a friend who teaches in the sciences in\u00a0a major state univeristy.\u00a0 He once confided that he could lose his job if he became vocal about his rejection of evolution.\u00a0 There are many qualified scientists who reject Darwin&#8217;s theory and who keep quite for fear of their jobs.\u00a0 Also, there are many educational and research\u00a0institiutions that would never hire a young earth creationist.\u00a0 This seems to contradict the fact that the same crowd who rejects such people also seems to trumpet pluralism and invoke it when necessay to get their viewpoints across or put other viewpoints down.\u00a0 All in\u00a0all, who is trying to intimidate who?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently read two books on Bible and science issues.\u00a0 One was the summary of RATE research by Dr. Don DeYoung, Thousands&#8230;Not Billions,\u00a0which spoke in favor of detailed scientific support for a young age for the earth (with which I agree).\u00a0 I was refreshed by the honest spirit I found.\u00a0 At points where the evidence [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[35,38],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/892"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=892"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/892\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":897,"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/892\/revisions\/897"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=892"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=892"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=892"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
