{"id":1052,"date":"2012-06-28T14:54:04","date_gmt":"2012-06-28T18:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/?p=1052"},"modified":"2012-07-05T14:33:58","modified_gmt":"2012-07-05T18:33:58","slug":"kevin-bauder-and-baptist-distinctives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/2012\/06\/kevin-bauder-and-baptist-distinctives\/","title":{"rendered":"Kevin Bauder and Baptist Distinctives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Bauder-Kevin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1053\" title=\"Bauder Kevin\" src=\"http:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Bauder-Kevin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kevin Bauder, former President of Central Baptist Theological Seminary and current Research Professor of Systematic Theology at Central, recently wrote a book, published by Regular Baptist Press, entitled <em>Baptist Distinctives and New Testament Church Order<\/em>.\u00a0 Earlier this week I purchased the book at the annual meeting of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches and attended a workshop where Kevin interacted with many pastors on related issues (a workshop moderated by Kevin Mungons of RBP).\u00a0 I performed a hearty skim of the book and believe Kevin\u2019s approach to Baptist distinctives is close to mine.\u00a0 I was especially pleased that the emphasis on the New Testament approach to the Church or \u2013 as Kevin says it \u2013 New Testament authority was dealt with first.\u00a0 I was also happy that Kevin said in the workshop that this single distinctive is the lynchpin for the other distinctives in the package that Baptists generally believe.<\/p>\n<p>I think it is possible the Baptist historians have been better at identifying this lynchpin than Baptist theologians down through the years.\u00a0 At least discussions about the so-called \u201cprimitive\u201d church are plentiful (see Armitage, Orchard, Vedder, etc.).\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0While Baptist peoples have disagreed among themselves about whether the primitive or early biblical churches passed down the pattern for doing church in an unbroken chain through history (e.g., the landmark debate), one thing is clear.\u00a0 Baptists look to the New Testament for doing church.\u00a0 This makes them somewhat dispensational in disposition even if they don\u2019t claim that label.\u00a0 Baptists do not go to the OT for the pattern for how to do church even though OT wisdom can certainly be a guide for life in applicatory ways.\u00a0 But the model is distinctively a NT one.<\/p>\n<p>Out of this comes the main contribution of the modern Baptist movement in my opinion \u2013 the clarification of the significance of the local church.\u00a0 This concept moved into mainstream evangelicalism over time and became a major competing model for doing church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kevin Bauder, former President of Central Baptist Theological Seminary and current Research Professor of Systematic Theology at Central, recently wrote a book, published by Regular Baptist Press, entitled Baptist Distinctives and New Testament Church Order.\u00a0 Earlier this week I purchased the book at the annual meeting of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[12],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1052"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1052"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1052\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1056,"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1052\/revisions\/1056"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1052"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1052"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/our-hope.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1052"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
